He died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro this morning.
He was one of the greatest actors of his generation, without any question, with a broad career on American television as well as British film.
His agent Janet Glass told Sky News she only had "wonderful things" to say about the actor.
Originally a Shakespearean stage actor, Woodward rose to fame in the 1960s and early 1970s in the television spy series Callan.
In 1973 he played the lead role in the cult thriller The Wicker Man.
The film's director, Robin Hardy, described Woodward as "one of the greatest actors of his generation."

He added: "He was an absolute star of The Wicker Man. He was an extremely nice human being."
It was the 1980s hit US TV series The Equalizer which earned Woodward international attention and a Golden Globe award.
